Candy Apple Pops | South Shore Moms

By Guest Blogger Anna Gass

With Halloween right around the corner, it is always fun to come up with simple food projects to do with the kids.  I always wince at candy apples because the apples are big, really difficult to eat and prove to be a sticky mess.

However, though it’s laden with candy, I do like the idea of a crisp organic apple at the center of this treat and I figured if I could make it easier to eat, it might be fun to make at home.

So, instead of a full apple, I began by cutting apples into thick, 1 ½ inch slices.  Then, after making a small slit in the bottom, I added the wooden stick handle.  I melted a few different chocolates like milk and white or candy melts like orange and green for Halloween.  You can do any kind of chocolate you like.  Dark chocolate is my favorite.

Since my children are still small, I take care of the chocolate dipping but older kids could handle this task.  Place the, still warm, chocolate apples on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Then, lay out a bunch of fun toppings like jimmies, nuts, pretzels and even crushed up oreos.  You can even drizzle a few different chocolates on top.  The kids will have a blast customizing each apple and no combination is wrong; they all end up tasting fantastic.

Finally, I let them harden up in the fridge for 20 minutes just to make sure all the toppings stick and the chocolate will not drip.  Then, let the apple pop eating begin.

Needed:

Apples, sliced 1 ½ inch thick

wooden popsicle sticks

2 cups chocolate, melted

toppings like:

sprinkles

chopped nuts

mini marshmallows

crushed pretzels

crushed oreos

Use your imagination and have fun!
