Recipe: Slow-cooked Apple Sauce from Michaela at Home Dwelling | South Shore Moms

One of the best parts of the South Shore Moms is that we are meeting some pretty cool local moms who are doing amazing things on top of being moms! Michaela was kind enough to be featured as one of our “Meet a Moms” AND gave us not one but two delicious recipes. Michaela teaches cooking classes out of her home and has a wonderful blog called Home Dwelling. The second recipe she is sharing with us is slow-cooked applesauce. Thank you, Michaela!

Slow-cooked Applesauce

My kids love applesauce and eat it with plain, whole milk yogurt for breakfast quite a bit. This slow-cooked applesauce is so simple to make and is exponentially better than anything you can get in a jar and is an even bigger treat when its warm. It’s best to use apple cider to cook the apples but in a pinch I’ve used water as well. Please don’t use an apple that will hold it’s shape like a Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Cortland. You’ll want something that will soften and collapse like McIntosh, Macoun or Jonagold. If you are picking apples and are not sure what’s best, just ask the farmer and they’ll point you in the right direction. There are so many local names that may not be familiar but could work very well here. If you prefer your applesauce with a little texture, cook the mixture on the shorter side. I normally make this in a slow cooker but if you don’t have one use a Dutch oven. (Bake the apple sauce in the oven at 300 for about 2-3 hours.)

3 pounds apples, about 8-10 medium apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1-2 inch chunks
3/4 cup of apple cider or juice
2 tablespoons of sugar or more depending on the tartness of your apples
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt

Combine the apples, cider, sugar, cinnamon and salt in a slow cooker
Cover and cook on low for about 3-4 hours, until the apples are collapsed and starting to fall apart
Mash the apple mixture with a potato masher and check to see if more sugar is needed
This will keep in the fridge for about a week
