Meet Sarah | South Shore Moms

Sarah grew up in Stratford, CT. She moved to Boston after graduating from Boston College and pretty much never left (from CT and a BC Eagle… love her)! She has two beautiful kiddos, a daughter, Reagan who is six and a son, Brodie who is four. They moved to the South Shore in 2007 and currently live in Cohasset.

◇ What is your favorite thing about living on the South Shore?

I love living in a a beach town that is also so close to Boston by boat and train.

◇ What do you love to do with your kids around town?

We love being outside so the beach goes without saying. The kids also love riding on the bike trail, going to the shipyard to see the boats or taking the boat into the city for the day. Hornstra for ice cream and a visit with the cows is always well received. Even just taking a walk in Cohasset Village and seeing the train go by pretty much still stops my kids in their tracks. We also have an awesome neighborhood full of kids so they’re perfectly content playing right in their own backyard with their neighborhood buddies.

◇ What is your favorite season around here?

My kids are at great ages for Sandy Beach right now. If we are in town in the summer you can find us at the beach. The kids also started kayaking last summer so we are looking forward to that this coming summer.

◇ Favorite family friendly restaurant in the area?

Perch 143- they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My kids love the kids menu and I love that the kids menu has a lot of healthy options!

◇ Can you share a kid friendly favorite recipe with us?

My kids enjoy making granola with me. What’s nice is that we can change it up from time to time. Sometimes they’re in the mood for nuts and fruit and other times they want coconut flakes and mini chips. One of my kids likes to eat it plain as a snack and the other prefers it with milk. So easy and kid approved.

Check out the recipe!

◇ What is your go-to fitness class around town?

I absolutely love Glove Up in Cohasset and Bar Method in Hingham. Both fitness studios offer challenging classes and they both have on site childcare as well which is a huge bonus!

◇ What is your favorite moment as a mom to date?

I’ve got to say I cherish those little moments I catch these days where they are being kind or sweet and loving to one another-that really melts my heart!

◇ What do you find to be the toughest part about being a mom?

For me it’s the worrying that comes along with it! I feel like mom worry is way different than pre-mom worry! You have these little people that you are tasked with caring for and keeping safe and I feel like it’s easy for your mind to race to that worrying place (and media doesn’t help these days) and it can be really hard to take a breath, let it go, and to know everything is going to be ok. That’s why it’s so important to have a supportive group of mom friends to help you through those times. Chances are if you’re worrying about something kid related you either have a friend thinking the exact same thing or at least a friend who can talk you off that worrying ledge!

◇ What is the best advice you have received as a mom?

It’s ok not to love every single second of motherhood. I mean, we all LOVE being moms but who really loves incessant crying, or temper tantrums in the grocery store. Ha!

◇ What is the best advice you would like to give to a new mom?

I think it is important to surround yourself with strong, supportive people. When you’re having a rough mom day being able to reach out and talk to others can be so very helpful!

◇ What is one thing you never leave the house without?

Sunglasses.

◇ What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I actually like to refinish old furniture. I love painting alone while listening to music and then shopping around for cool hardware for each piece of furniture.

◇ What do you do for work now or what did you do before having kids?

Before having my children I was an 8th grade math teacher. Although I do miss the energy of a classroom I have been keeping busy with our property business. My husband and I started Cape Away Properties 8 years ago. We have been buying properties (typically distressed ones), mainly in Chatham, and rehabilitating them. Then we either rent them out or sell them. I focus mostly on the interior design piece and my husband is the one who deals with the rental side of it. It’s actually been a really fun job for me now that I’m no longer in the classroom. I love that each project is challenging and unique, I love that the hours are flexible, and it’s also great that he and I get to work together!

◇ Are you involved with any local organizations?

I am very involved in volunteering with the NVNA And Hospice as well as the Cancer Support Community. This past December I co-chaired The Festival of Wreaths Fundraiser which raises money to support the programs offered at the Cancer Support Community. This coming spring, I am going to be volunteering with NVNA And Hospice on the committee for The 12 Fundraiser, which raises money and awareness for The Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham.

◇ Where do you love to shop?

My favorite store is Anthropologie. I also like Evereve. For the kids I pretty much stick to the basics like Old Navy and Target- especially since I am absolutely terrible at getting stains out of clothes!

◇ Ok, share your favorite must-have product for moms?

Honey Gardens Elderberry Syrup. Being down for the count while chasing kids around is no fun. I even give my kids a teaspoon a day of Sambucus For Kids Elderberry during cold/flu season. I swear by this immune booster!

◇ Favorite must have product for kids?

Well, now that I have a long haired daughter in kindergarten I’d have to say she does not leave for school or sports without a few spritz’s of Fairy Tales Lice Prevention Hair Spray. I’m terrified just thinking about lice and I just cross my fingers and hope this potion really works!

◇ Anything else you would love to share with our readers?

Thanks so much for asking me to participate in Meet A Mom and congratulations on creating such a great resource for South Shore Moms. This is exactly what moms in our burbs needed!

Thank you, to you, Sarah! We love your mommy advice and product recommendations. X
