Meet a Mom:Christina Godfrey, Director of the Savage Godfrey Art Gallery - South Shore Moms
This week’s “Meet a Mom” highlights the incredibly talented Christina Godfrey, Director of the Savage Godfrey Gallery in Norwell. I am especially excited to feature Christina as we are also honoring her mother this week.

Christina followed in her mother’s footsteps as an art consultant at The Sunne Savage Gallery. Her mother, Sunne Savage, founded the business in 1976, and Christina has since become a partial owner. In 2024, Christina led a rebranding of the art gallery, reflecting her dedication and leadership over the past twenty years.

The Savage Godfrey Gallery (formerly Sunne Savage Gallery) is a multi-generational, women-owned business that promotes emerging and mid-career regional artists. In addition to exhibitions at their Norwell gallery, they specialize in custom commissions, collection management—including framing and conservation—and appraisals.

Beyond the gallery, Christina co-curates the Mini Art Museum at Boston Children’s Hospital and manages several corporate art collections.

Despite her busy professional life, Christina’s most important role is being a mom to her two sons, aged 11 and 13. The family has called Norwell home since 2015, and Christina truly loves being part of this community.

Where are you from originally?
Winchester, MA – Moved to the south shore in 2015

Tell us about your family! How many kids, names/ages?
Two boys, Charlie (13), Grant (11)

How did you start your business?
Followed my mothers footsteps, i came out of college and worked right away for a Boston company called RSM (inventoried their collection, sourced for a new office and installed at their new office, then curated a gallery for them) starting in 2002 and they are still a client of ours today! – as an art consultant under my moms roof of the Sunne Savage Gallery. She started the business in 1976 and i
have come on as a partial owner together under Savage Godfrey Gallery.

Where do you now call home and how long have you lived there?
Norwell – since 2015 so 11 years!

What is your favorite part about living in the South Shore?
The Coastal community!

What family activity do you enjoy most?
Enjoy being outside with the family! I love having a fire pit, kayaking, bike riding and its all more fun with the family! It’s been really fun introducing new outdoor activities in the family as the boys are getting older, it’s been so fun seeing them enjoy the activities I enjoy.

What is your favorite part about the work you do?
I like introducing / helping people find art that then gets them excited to learn more about art – potentially start collecting more art in one way or another.

Are you involved with any non-profits or do any volunteering?
I work with different art associations to do portfolio reviews, jurying exhibitions all around the South Shore & Boston ! (South Shore art center, Duxbury Art Association, Cambridge Art Association) I enjoy sharing the experiences i’ve had with others so they can create / share /work /displace better through these different non profit organizations for the growth of emerging artists

What do you find to be the toughest part about being a working mom?
Patience at the end of the day to help with daily tasks like homework and chores.

What is the best advice you have received as a mom?
One of the things was when i was a new mom, someone said the baby grows with you. Which was really calming to hear so that when i was first bringing the baby home from the hospital they don’t do much because you are learning to become a mom and then they start to be more active as you start to learn how to be a mom then they start to move around and you’ve caught up and can really move
with them. It all happens in phases and that advice was really helpful to calm my nerves freshly home from the hospital. More recently, like COVID, I had some mom’s – we all thought how we weren’t trained to be teachers and our kids were home trying to virtually learn and
balancing getting them outside. Just trying to figure out the “do what’s best for your family” no matter what is going on.

What is your best advice for a new mom?
Taking the two pieces of advice someone gave me and merging them together: you don’t have to keep up with the Joneses around you – do what’s best for your family and for you. In the end you’ll all be happier.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
My birthday is the day before Halloween, and i love all things halloween but I absolutely detest haunted houses – I feel like they see me coming and I am a scardy cat!

Is there a Quote or mantra you live by?
The motto at St Marks where I went to school was “whatever you do, do your best”

Your go-to Pandora/Spotify/Apple Music station?
Winter + skiing = Noah Kahn
Heading to the beach = The Elevators

Your favorite local spot for: date night, coffee break, workout, new outfit, self-care, “me time”
I love Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury, The Beacon for coffee & breakfast across from the Gallery, Love lunch at Sparrel’s & Cheevers across from the Gallery. I recently hit a spa day at Mirabeau and it was lovely!

Anything else you’d love to share?
I may have said this in other places but I had an uncommon upbringing being surrounded by the arts. I have met some fantastic people who are artists throughout my career. At the Gallery we are showing them, I encourage people who are interested in art or interested in becoming interested in art to come visit, come to our receptions, our artist talks bc people are making beautiful things on the surface but in fact are usually much deeper – if you come to visit you may meet the artist and learn more about them &
the piece often time there is more to the art than you can see. The point is – low pressure situations, just come in take a look, shake hands and have a good time.

Be sure to follow on social media to learn more about the Savage Godfrey Gallery and to stay up to date on all exhibitions.

If you haven’t visited yet, I highly recommend stopping by—especially this Friday, June 12th, for the opening reception of  A Summer Social featuring artwork by Karla Hunter, Amy Ross and Lisa Daria Kennedy.
