Weekend Roundup 7.6 | South Shore Moms

Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July! There’s no reason to stop celebrating… sit back and enjoy the weather. The summer is just getting started! To all those who are traveling, we hope you have a fun and safe weekend.

AROUND TOWN

Kickoff to the Historic House Tours in Duxbury

For the rest of the summer, the Historic Bradford House and the Historic King Caesar House will be open for house tours. It is a great chance to embrace the area we live in and teach them history first hand. There will be family-friendly and hands-on activities.

Fantastic Firefly Festival

Head to the North River Wildlife Sanctuary to join Mass Audubon in reigniting their Firefly Watch party. Don Salvatore and the South Shore Sanctuaries will be hosting games, activities, crafts, and demonstrations while all ages enjoy learning about the program.

Cohasset Jr. Triathlon

Let your little ones experience the excitement and accomplishment of participating in a mini-triathlon on Saturday morning. Using a 25-foot pool, there will be the chance for 6-12-year-olds to swim, bike, and run short distances. Kids of all abilities (and all bikes!) are welcome to attend. They can pick and choose what events to do, teaching them the importance of hard work and dedication!

Looking to get outdoors?

Head to the South Shore Natural Science Center for Nature Encounters or to Weir River Farm to meet some barnyard animals.

Summer Bash Outdoor Artisan Fair

All weekend, you can stop by the July Summer Bash Outdoor Artisan Fair at Brant Rock in Marshfield. Support local artisans and find some fun crafts.

CELEBRATE WITH INA GARTEN’S FLAG CAKE

Still feeling festive? This recipe takes a bit of dedication but the end product is definitely worth it! Have you tried this before? share some photos, we love to see what TSSM is cooking!

Directions:

Heat the oven to 350 Fº.

Butter and flour an 18 by 13 by 1 1/2-inch sheet pan.

Cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on high speed, until light and fluffy. On medium speed, add the eggs, 2 at a time, then add the sour cream and vanilla. Scrape down the sides using a rubber spatula and stir until smooth.

Sift together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda in a bowl. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until just combined. Pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the center of the oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until when you poke it with a toothpick it comes out clean. Cool to room temperature.

For the icing, combine the butter, cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mixing just until smooth.

Spread three-fourths of the icing on the top of the cooled sheet cake. Outline the flag on the top of the cake with a toothpick. Fill the upper left corner with blueberries. Place 2 rows of raspberries across the top of the cake like a red stripe. Put the remaining icing in a pastry bag fitted with a star tip and pipe two rows of white stripes below the raspberries. Alternate rows of raspberries and icing until the flag is completed. Pipe stars on top of the blueberries.

Oftentimes, this cake is best served in the pan but if you want to turn it out onto a board before frosting, use parchment paper when you grease and flour the pan.
